If you have been reading my past blog's you now know that the NFR is over with.

On the last round it was sweet as ever, I managed to place in the tie down roping go-round and clinch a third place check in the average. I also won third in the average in the steer wrestling. Throughout...

1 Question (Get Off, Warm up, & Jerk line) Author: Stanson
Date Published: 06/04/2008

Hey Josh, I wanted to ask you how you learned the techniques of getting off your horse after you have roped the calf and are getting ready to dismount to do groundwork? Any tricks to learn this quickly? Also, how do you warm up your horse when you are at a rodeo? When a horse tends to be nervous, what is your way of calming and settling him down? With Jerk Lines, how do you use yours and what would you prefer for a beginner? Thanks and Good Luck at your upcoming rodeos!

- Prepearing to dismount your horse just takes practice. While your riding around you can just start getting off using your left hand on the saddle horn and swing your leg over the rump of the horse and step down, do not jump off.  Warm your horse up until they calm down if they are nervous. Don`t be afraid to saddle them the morning of the rodeo and ride them for an hour before itt will take the edge and nerves out of one.
The jerk line is a much needed piece of equipment and can help out during a rodeo run, I never use a jerkline much in the practice pen, I only use them at the rodeo. You will want to tie your jerkline to the bottom of the bit, and run it through a pulley at the saddle horn, then you can tuck it in your belt either on the left side or right side of your body. The right side will pull more on your horse so if he just needs a little then tuck it under your belt on the left side of your body. You should have about two to three tucks in your belt and the loops can be an length just make sure they do not get in the way of anything to get hung up.

Good luck and Be safe!!

3 Question Author: Stanson
Date Published: 05/10/2008

Hey Josh, I wanted to ask you a couple of questions: What goes through your mind when you are getting ready to head into the roping box? Do you ever get nervous at times? How do you take defeat say when you do not win or place at a rodeo? Should a cowboy always have their mind set on winning something when competing or should a cowboy just take things as they come? Do you believe that laziness will get you nowhere in the rodeo world? Thanks and Congratulations on Winning RodeoHouston!

Responses Date Responded

- When I am getting ready to rope the only thing I am thinkin about is how far I have to let the cattle go before I can go. Then I allow my ability to take over from there. I really don`t get nervous in a way that it affects me although I am keyed up and ready to go. I handle defeat the same as I handle success, your goinjg to have times where you are not winning but walk out of the arena with your head up and go to the practice pen and work on the basics and the next rodeo you will have success.  You should always wake up with success in your eyes. I am believe I am going to win everytime I back in the box. Your right laziness and negative attitude`s will not get a person anywhere in the rodeo arena or in the arena of life.
Till next time take care and be safe!!

Hey Josh: A belated but heartfelt thank you for the time you took to be interviewed last week. It was so much fun talking with you and I learned a lot about a life I knew nothing about. You are so articulate and well spoken for someone your age, and your life seems so focused on all the right things. I am sure there will be much in the interview that we can use in the book. I may come back to you later this summer or fall with a few followup questions. In the meantime, best of luck in all your endeavors. I`m sure I`ll be reading about your successes for some time to come! Best, Marji Wilkens
